Luke 10:38-42

This begins with Martha opening her home to Jesus. It seems like a small thing, but how many have closed all access to Jesus? Have you opened your home to the Savior?

While she was preparing the meal, her

sister was sitting in fellowship with Jesus.

This is where the rub starts. Martha

thought Mary should be helping her.

Many times we hear sermons scolding

Martha for being busy serving Jesus as

He sat in her home. We hear how we

should stop all service for the Lord and sit

at His feet. But we don't hear Jesus telling

Martha to stop serving. We hear Him tell her not to be anxious and worried about things that weren't necessary.

I think this is more of a picture of Jesus loving you as you are. Some are born with a nature to serve, while some are born with a nature to sit in prayer. Both are good and necessary. And Jesus delights in both.

Mary and Martha were Jesus’ good friends. Martha stayed busy supplying her guests with things that made their visit more comfortable. She shouldn't be commended for seeing to the important needs of others.

But Jesus commended her sister Mary. Jesus noted, in effect, that Martha stayed busy with form, but that Mary concentrated on substance. He commended Mary for choosing the good part, the words of truth of Jesus Christ, which will never be taken from her. We should follow Mary’s example and desire God’s truth above everything else.

"Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus."
