What up with the prodigal son?
I've heard the prodigal son explained in many ways. Different people substituted for the characters in the parables. But I don't think I've ever heard it explained this way. (Doesn't mean it never has been. I just haven't heard it.)
In scripture God is always called Father.
There are two men that only have God as their earthly father.
Jesus, born of a virgin. And Adam. Formed by God.
Adam was born on earth before Jesus, but Jesus was with God at the time of creation.
Jesus is the older son, Adam is the younger son.
Adam left God when he left the Garden.
Adam (and his ancestors) have seen how hard it can be to live without God (the Father). And we are coming to our senses and want to return home.
God is waiting for us with open arms.
But what about the older son? He (Jesus) has always been with the Father. All that God has is his.
But waiting outside?
The story here is unfinished. Was Jesus telling the people the end will be acted out in your time?
Do we forget Luke 22:42?
"Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."
Is Jesus showing us that it is God the Father that loves us? (John 3:16.)
The story doesn't say that the Father told the older son, he had to come in or he would be punished.
No, Jesus would obey the Father because of love. Not law. And I see God wanting us to obey the same way. Out of love.
